Jeff Carlson Band - Reviewed

- Molly Foster

From Las Vegas, Nevada, hard rockers of the Jeff Carlson Band came ready to put on a show this last Sunday, April 3rd, at Duffy’s Tavern in Lincoln, Nebraska. On most nights, Duffy’s is just another college bar, but not many people know about their rich history of live music dating back to 1986. Ranging from local college artists to bands as big as Nirvana, Duffy brings in all sorts of artists who are ready to take on the stage, no matter how big the crowd. A Sunday night rock-and-roll concert isn’t on most Nebraskan’s bucket lists, including mine, but these guys put on one hell of a show. Even with a small crowd, the band gave it their all and made their songs ones to remember. By the end of the show, I was looking up similar artists to figure out where I could get more music with that sound. One of the coolest songs to hear live was one of their top charting songs, listed at #34 in the world after its release, as well as their tour name, Over My Shoulder.

The essence of the name is less about being paranoid and always looking over your shoulder, but more about when you look behind you, you see who you once were and now realize you can be whoever you want to be. Similarly to that, their song Yesterday's Gone, which was also my favorite to hear live, is a rock anthem for moving on. Jeff Carlson Band incorporates lots of personal stories and battles into their lyrics which is something I liked about hearing them live; they told the story of every song before they sang it. The guys put their all into each song, their stage presence, but most of all making sure they had fun on stage and with the crowd. While I took pictures they would smile, pose, point, and make it more interactive on both ends.

They hung out with fans before and after the show, as well as welcoming all who came to the show even if they had never heard of the band before. I didn’t get the opportunity to talk to the band privately, but even the quick interaction I had with them after the show displayed their love for music and performing live. Their show in Lincoln was only the sixth of the tour, heading East and finishing their tour in Texas. To find a full list of their shows, head to their website here.
